Boat Accident Claims Over Twenty-Five Lives in Nigeria
The vessel, carrying primarily traders traveling from Kogi’s Ibaji local government area to the Ilushi market in Edo State, capsized mid-journey on the Niger River Tuesday evening. Kingsley Fanwo, Kogi State’s commissioner for information and communication, shared the grim update in a statement posted on X.
“This is a heartbreaking loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, as well as the entire Ibaji local government area, during this moment of grief,” Fanwo said, confirming the recovery of at least 26 bodies by rescue teams.
Local media, referencing eyewitness accounts, warned that the death toll could rise, as more victims are believed to have been involved in the incident.
